The Late Shows 10 line-up announced
The North East’s annual free after-hours culture crawl The Late Shows has announced its biggest line-up yet in celebration of 2016’s 10th event on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 May.
This year’s edition – supported by Port of Tyne – boasts more than 70 arts, culture and heritage venues across Tyneside that will open in the evening to offer visitors a weekend packed with one-off activities.
Bill Griffiths, Head of Programmes at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums and Project Manager of The Late Shows, said:
“We’re excited to announce the line-up for our 10th birthday edition - it’s our biggest and most diverse offering yet, full of high quality arts, culture and heritage. Thank you to all of our participating venues who’ve worked so hard to help us make The Late Shows happen once again.
“Over the last decade people have clearly enjoyed sampling NewcastleGateshead’s cultural scene in a different way and we now look forward to welcoming both new visitors and our loyal Late Shows audience in May. It promises to be a memorable weekend.”
New venues for 2016’s programme include Breeze Creatives’ studios at Bamburgh House, Dance City, St Thomas the Martyr Church and the iconic Grey’s Monument.
Other highlights include FERTILE GROUND’s dance triple bill at Sanctuary Artspace, tours of the Swing Bridge, an exploration of the more adult collections at the Great North Museum: Hancock and contemporary art group UNIT 44’s takeover of the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas.
It’s not just for adults, though. Families are sure to enjoy free entry to Seven Stories, furry friends at Ouseburn Farm and Labyrinth’s fire displays on Friday night, among many other attractions.
All in all, another bumper weekend of open studios, workshops, exhibitions, inventions, curiosities, music, dance, history, art, food and drink is in store for culture lovers in the North East.
Andrew Moffat CBE, Chief Executive of the Port of Tyne, said:
“The Late Shows continues to get bigger and more diverse each year and we are delighted to be supporting it once again, particularly during its 10th birthday.
“In addition to our funding support the Port of Tyne is once again taking part with free tours of the Swing Bridge, which is a prime example of the sort of experience you can expect from The Late Shows. It is something that you may never have thought about doing. Many of the venues put on something especially for the occasion, which makes it such an exciting and memorable event for regular and new visitors.”
The Late Shows warms up from 7pm on Friday 13 May in the Ouseburn Valley only before Saturday 14 May’s main event adds venues across Newcastle and Gateshead. Venues in Gateshead open an hour earlier on Saturday, at 6pm.
The fun continues into the small hours with The Late Late Shows, a fringe event that brings together a selection of venues that are already open at night, including Ernest, The Cumberland Arms and ¡VAMOS! Social.
Free bus services will be available during the event to help visitors move between venues.

Places for guided tours of the Victoria Tunnel, the Swing Bridge, Grey’s Monument, the Tyne Theatre, Bessie Surtees House and the Old Newcastle area are expected to fill up quickly and should be booked in advance online.
