We are thrilled to announce the artists who have been selected by Creative Central NCL to create new commissions for our partnership in 2024.
Emma Tominey
AR Art Trail at The Common Room
Multimedia artist Emma Tominey invites you to experience The Common Room like never before. In her interactive augmented reality art trail, Emma overlays digital artworks on existing portraits, animates the subjects, or replaces them entirely with lesser-known historical figures.
Emma is a creative producer, curator, multimedia participatory artist, and designer. She has spent the last ten years building and running a multidisciplinary studio and developing a career in arts education.
Haley
Micro Poems, Micro Brews at Blackfriars
Dearest Haley brings the history of Blackfriars to life with on-the-spot micro poetry performances. The poems will also incorporate your thoughts and responses as you explore the 13th-century building. Afterwards, you’ll receive a handwritten copy of the poem as a memento.
Haley is a sculptor who specialises in digital and physical mediums. With expertise in virtual reality and a keen eye for found materials, they use first-hand experience and secondary references to research and uncover overlooked narratives, creating works that spark curiosity and wonder in the viewer.
In their art, Haley explores the concept of reproduction, utilising tools like 3D printing to turn digital sculptures into physical ones and photogrammetry to turn physical sculptures into digital ones. This interplay between the digital and physical realms is a central theme in Haley’s work, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of art.
Multiminded + Deborah Snell
Animated Arcade at Grainger Market
Is that a glint in a doll’s eye? A record spinning? A synthesiser playing itself? Are those naughty robots making a run for it? Digital artists Multiminded with illustrator Deborah Snell use projection mapping to animate the Grainger Market, imagining what happens when everyone has gone home.
Multiminded’s Fiona Birkbeck and Jim Bell work as digital artists specialising in projection design and animation. They also work as designer-makers from their studio at the Mushroom Works in the Ouseburn.
Deborah Snell is an artist based in Newcastle. She creates illustrations, prints, and models for installations, projections, and music videos. She loves to take on a character and see the world through their eyes, discovering new perspectives and intriguing moments.
Theresa Poulton
Pearl Primus, OMOWALE at Dance City
In the 1940s, African American dancer Pearl Primus transformed the landscape of American and African dance with powerful protest dances. In celebration of this remarkable choreographer, pioneer, and activist, artist Theresa Poulton presents a large-scale, text-based, polychromatic painting influenced by African-style geometric prints.
Theresa is a freelance artist who creates hard-edged geometric, hybrid paintings, often a fusion of abstraction and stylised text. Theresa has experience curating and co-curating exhibitions and working with regional, national, and international artists. She also devises and delivers creative workshops in communities, schools, colleges, and universities.
Tim Dalling, Jeremy Bradfield, Faye MacCalman
The Ballad of Blackfriars at Blackfriars
Performers, writers, and composers Tim Dalling, Jeremy Bradfield, and Faye MacCalman present a video projection, ballad song, and immersive soundscape charting the history of Blackfriars. Expect the weird and wonderful, with looped saxophonic soundscapes, using traditional biblical mystery stories as three people tell the history of a city.
Tim Dalling has worked as a performer, accordionist, songwriter and director and has lived in Newcastle since 1987. For 25 years, he was one-third of the famous Old Rope String Band. He has worked with Kneehigh, Emma Rice’s Wise Children, and Sally Cookson. On Tyneside, he has worked with Northern Stage, Live Theatre, Theatre Sans Frontieres and Kitchen Zoo.
Jeremy Bradfield is a video artist, composer and sound designer, specialising in video installation that responds to sound and theatrical storytelling. Jeremy has created bespoke work for Northern Stage, Star & Shadow Cinema and Alphabetti Theatre. Most recently, he performed a piece called Beneath Us for North Pennines AONB, a site-specific subterranean performance for the public in Nenthead Mines.
Faye MacCalman is a performer, composer-songwriter and improviser on saxophone, clarinet, voice and electronics. Faye fuses experimental songwriting with free-weaving melodies and rhythms, drawing on jazz, blues, folk and rock music inspired by raw, under-the-surface emotional worlds and magical realism. Faye is the current artist in residence at The Glasshouse ICM and performs as a solo artist and as bandleader of jazz-art-rock adventurers Archipelago, nominated for UK Jazz Act of the Year in the Jazz FM Awards. As a collaborator, Faye has played with Arun Ghosh, Maximo Park, The Unthanks and David Brewis (Field Music).
