Newcastle’s streets hold traces of extraordinary lives — people of African descent whose journeys passed through this city and shaped history far beyond it.
Join us for a guided walk focused on outstanding individuals. Together we’ll walk, listen, reflect and co-create a collage linking your story with theirs, weaving past and present into a shared moment.
Whose path will you follow — Ellen Craft, Henry “Box” Brown, Ida B. Wells, Ira Aldridge, Muhammad Ali or Paul Robeson?
Come for one. Stay for more.
African Lives in North East England
Discover the often untold stories of brilliant and resilient people of African heritage and their roles in North East past, present and future.
The African Lives Project works to encourage an appreciation of the African contribution to the North East. It is a voluntary unfunded community group which has produced written resources and an interactive live and online walk of Newcastle City Centre.
