African Lives in Northern England

Discover the often untold stories of brilliant and resilient people of African heritage and their roles in North East past, present and future. The African Lives Project works to encourage an appreciation of the African contribution to the North East. It is a voluntary unfunded community group which has produced written resources and an interactive live and online walk of Newcastle City Centre.

70. A stroll through Newcastle African history

This stroll through Newcastle City Centre will highlight residents and visitors of African descent who created positive change worldwide, including in the North East of England. In a short, accessible stroll participants will learn about 2-3 of the following: Muhammad Ali, Ida B. Wells, Ira Aldridge, Paul Robeson, Ellen Craft. Come and walk in their footsteps with us while gaining an appreciation of our rich and diverse local history.
