Special late-night opening of The Great Assassin, a solo exhibition by artist Andrew Maughan. See a series of large three-dimensional paintings that depict a character named ‘The Great Assassin’, inspired by the Zodiac Killer, a real-life murder mystery that has spawned endless conspiracy theories. They combine oil paint with fake fur, glitter and three-dimensional elements, and parody the way fear is used in politics and mainstream media as a tool to manipulate the public.
A second body of work takes the form of life-size figurative sculptures, inspired by Hornby models, with speech bubbles quoting from comments sections of online arts and culture articles. Operating as satire, the sculptures playfully address the elitism of the art industry, drawing attention to those who have little access to its discourse.
