Steeped in history, this Norman fortress is a rugged reminder of northern England’s turbulent past and where the city of Newcastle got its name. With ancient passageways and chambers, the Castle reveals hidden stories of its previous inhabitants from over the centuries, and boasts the most commanding views of the city from its rooftop. Newcastle Castle is a heritage site in the centre of Newcastle Upon Tyne run by a registered charity called The Heart of the City Partnership. We look after the two main surviving buildings of the medieval Castle, the Black Gate and Castle Keep.

Join members of the Newcastle Array re-enactment group in the Blackbird Tavern beneath the Black Gate. For one night only the medieval guard room beneath the Black Gate will be transformed into a medieval tavern populated with colourful characters drinking, gambling, plying their various trades, telling tales and making mischief. Members of the public are encouraged to drop in, say hello, play a game of dice and listen to the tales of the people of medieval Newcastle.
Please note, Newcastle Castle will not be serving alcohol to the public, and unfortunately the Castle Keep will NOT be open during The Late Shows this year.
