Celebrating forty years of Side Gallery! Come and see the results of a major refurbishment and take in our current exhibition: THE COAL COAST

Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen's colour photographs, taken between 1999 and 2002, exploring the 'terrible beauty' of Durham's coal-scarred coastline.

The wreckage of the mining industry that defined a culture and shaped its communities lies strewn across its beaches.

Also, 'Song for Billy', an audiovisual installation combining New York based sound artists So Percussion's response to 'The Coal Coast' and ex-miner Freddie Welsh's personal testimony of the death of a young miner at Easington pit in the 90s.
